A project wrap - chiseling away at the todo list [Jan. 4th, 2010|12:10 pm]

Over the last six weeks, I gave some friends a hand with a piece of MOO code currently running as a mud at infernalworld.com. For much of the life of the game, it was maintained by four people in succession, none of whom took much time to document what they did, or stick to conventions of naming or design that made much sense to me.

It was fun to use my troubleshooting skills and some of my growing database knowledge in a non-job related setting. It reinforced a bit that this is probably the right direction to go in a professional context. At the same time, inbred, 15+ year old software with no documentation eventually involves some pretty nasty technical hurdles.

I've also been working alot at building another "top 10 things I always wanted to do" list. It was such a positive experience the first time, in terms of motivation and personal growth, that I am very much looking forward to indulging in it.

2009 was a good turning point for me. Bring it on, 2010.

A kind of challenge [Dec. 31st, 2009|02:10 pm]

In writing this short fiction, I came up with something a bit more open ended than I had originally been trying for. If anyone would like to toss out a chapter somewhere further along the same storyline, feel free.

Dear firefox dev team,

The purpose of a new version is not to add or intensify memory leaks and crash conditions.

Thank you,

A writing challenge [Dec. 28th, 2009|02:17 pm]

I was sent http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.11/sixwords.html as a writing challenge recently. The article describes writing stories in six words, which turned out to be really tough, for me. If writing is of interest, I'd highly recommend this as an exercise.
